Virgil Price, has spent the majority of his life either in, or on the ocean. Starting at a very early age, Virgil began to learn the ways of the sea through hands-on experience whether it was snorkeling with his mother in the Bahamas, or fishing offshore with his dad. His passion for the ocean grew as the years passed and, at the age of 11, he began diving to identify as many species of tropical fish as possible. Around that time, he also began competitive swimming which helped him become even stronger in the water. In his later teens, he picked up surfing and eventually ended up surfing all over the globe, even setting down roots in Australia for a year. In 2008, Virgil began his teaching career as a surf instructor for Nantucket Surfari, teaching children and adults alike, as well as special-needs children through the ?Surfers for Autism? program. Virgil found his calling in not simply teaching aspects of surfing, but in teaching a way of life as a waterman. He found that people needed to learn, among many topics, the intricacies of the ocean, the tides, the currents, the movement and flow of sand, and the timing and wavelengths of swell intervals. He also discovered that, with this knowledge came unfettered access to the sea, and with that, a great responsibility to care for it so that people could enjoy it for future generations. By 2011, Virgil found his way back to Juno/Palm Beach Gardens, teaching with Bluewater School of Surfing alongside William Kimball. During those following years, Virgil would pick up work as a mate on sport fishing trips to the Bahamas. It was on those trips where he really began to find that he enjoyed spending more time under the water than simply in it. He found himself freediving and spearfishing all throughout the Bahamas, especially the Berry Islands. With more experience came a greater understanding of the necessity for safety and standardization of procedure as he began diving and hunting deeper. Upon returning from the Bahamas, and in search of finding the ?proper way to do things,? Virgil took an F.I.I. Level 1 class in with Instructor trainer Errol Putigna and the rest was history. By lunchtime on the first day of level 1 he was already signed up for level 2. It became clear to Virgil that this knowledge of safety and responsibility (to those we dive with as well as the ocean and the wildlife contained within) must be passed on. Immediately after completion of Level 2, Virgil enlisted in the instructor training program. He successfully completed his training making assistant instructor and Level 1 instructor. While teaching, Virgil is currently pursuing higher-level professional certifications as well as completing the Level 3 Freediver among other courses in order to gain the knowledge to better serve his clients. Virgil is available for public and private classes. Feel free to email him at viprice44@mac.com
